What that noise is trying to tell you: Common car sounds explained

Most drivers know when something doesn't sound quite right.

The challenge is knowing whether it's something urgent, something minor, or simply a normal noise you've never noticed before.

One of the most common reasons customers contact us is because they've heard a new noise and want to know if they should be concerned. While it's impossible to diagnose every issue without seeing the vehicle, certain sounds can often point us in the right direction.

A squealing noise when braking

Brake squeal is one of the most common concerns we hear about.

The good news is that a squeak doesn't automatically mean your brakes need replacing. In some cases, it can be caused by dust, moisture, or the type of brake material fitted to the vehicle.

That said, persistent squealing can also indicate brake wear. If the noise has been there for a while or seems to be getting worse, it's worth having it checked.

Knocking sounds over bumps

If you hear a knocking noise when driving over speed bumps, potholes, or uneven roads, your suspension could be trying to tell you something.

Suspension components naturally wear over time. Bushes, links, and other parts can develop movement that creates noise and affects handling.

Sometimes the repair is straightforward. Other times, a more detailed inspection is needed to determine the cause.

A vibration through the steering wheel

A vibration isn't always accompanied by a noise, but it's something drivers tend to notice quickly.

This can sometimes be related to wheel balancing, tyre wear, alignment issues, or suspension components.

If the vibration appears at certain speeds and disappears at others, that's useful information to mention when speaking with your mechanic.

Grinding or scraping noises

A grinding noise should never be ignored.

Whether it's related to brakes, wheel bearings, or another component, grinding sounds often indicate excessive wear.

If you hear grinding while driving or braking, it's a good idea to have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

Don't panic, but don't ignore it

Not every unusual sound means a major repair is around the corner.

We've seen plenty of cases where a customer expected the worst, only to discover the issue was relatively minor.

The important thing is to pay attention when your vehicle starts behaving differently.
